How to Explain Jesus to a Child | A Biblical, Kid-Friendly Guide

by | Jan 26, 2026 | Christian Living

If you’ve ever tried to explain Jesus to your child, you’re not alone. It can feel overwhelming, especially if you didn’t grow up learning about Christianity yourself or you’re still figuring out what you believe.

You might wonder what to say, where to start, or how much your child is ready to understand.

But you don’t need to have perfect words or every answer. What matters most is sharing simple information with love and humility.

This guide is meant to help you have those conversations in a gentle, age-appropriate way, even if you’re learning right alongside them.

1. Start With Who Jesus Is

A simple place to begin is with this. Christians believe that Jesus is God’s Son, sent to earth because God loves us.

You might say to your child:

“Jesus is God’s Son. He came to earth to save us and show us what God is like.”

In the Bible, God speaks about Jesus and says, “This is My Son, whom I love.” — Matthew 3:17 NIV

This helps kids understand that Jesus is not a regular person. He is God’s Son.

But this part can be tricky… Jesus is also God Himself. God became human so we could know Him better. Jesus is completely God and completely human at the same time. This is a very complex topic and it’s okay if kids don’t fully grasp this right away.

— John 14:6 NIV

2. Help Them Understand Why Jesus Came to Earth

Kids often ask why things happen, so it helps to explain Jesus’ purpose in simple terms.

You can say:

“Jesus came to earth because He loves us. He came to save us, help us, and show us the way back to God.”

Christians believe that our world is broken. People hurt each other and we make wrong choices. The Bible calls this sin, which simply means choosing our own way instead of God’s. Sin separates us from God and from each other.

Jesus came to heal that separation.

The Bible says God sent Jesus not to punish the world, but to save it (John 3:16–17).

You might explain it like this:

“When people do wrong things, it creates distance between us and God. Jesus came to fix that separation and bring us close to God again.”

3. Talk About What Jesus Was Like on Earth

Children learn best through stories, so spend time talking about the life of Jesus.

Here are some things Jesus did:

  • helped people

  • healed the sick

  • calmed storms

  • fed hungry crowds

  • loved people that others ignored

  • taught with great wisdom
  • performed miracles

These stories show His kindness, His power, and His love.

Jesus once said, “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.” — John 14:9 NIV

Christians believe that when we look at Jesus, we’re seeing what God is like. When kids learn what Jesus did, they naturally understand His heart.

4. Explain Why Jesus Died on the Cross

The part about Jesus dying can feel heavy, especially for young children, so keep this simple and loving.

You might say:

“Jesus died on the cross because He loves you more than you can imagine. The Bible says that when we sin, there has to be a punishment, and the punishment for sin is death, which means separation from God forever. But Jesus took that punishment in our place. He chose to die for us so we would never have to be separated from God.”

The Bible says, “Christ died for our sins.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3 NIV

Then be sure to share this hope:

“Jesus didn’t stay dead. He came back to life three days later.”

5. Help Them Understand the Resurrection

Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead. This is called the resurrection.

You can explain:

“Jesus came back to life because He is more powerful than death. He is alive today, and that means He can help you every single day.”

Outside of His empty tomb, the Bible records an angel saying, “He is not here; He has risen!” — Luke 24:6 NIV

This part of the story gives children courage and reassurance. Jesus isn’t just part of history. He’s living and present in our lives right now.

6. Explain That Jesus Wants a Relationship With Them

Faith becomes real when kids understand that Jesus cares about them personally.

You can tell your child:

“Jesus wants to be your friend and your helper. He listens when you talk to Him, and He’s always near.”

The Bible says, “Come near to God, and He will come near to you.” — James 4:8 NIV

Let them know:

“You can talk to Jesus anytime. You can tell Him how you feel, what you need, what you’re thankful for, and what worries you. Say it right from your heart, and He will hear you.”

7. Use Simple Pictures and Everyday Examples

Sometimes visuals help children understand big ideas.

Try using:

  • a heart shape for His love

  • a cross to explain forgiveness

  • a small rock for His strength

  • a picture of a shepherd to show His care

Children learn through simple objects, stories, and experiences. These moments often stay with them longer than long explanations.

8. Answer Their Questions Honestly and Gently

Kids will ask things you don’t expect:

“Why did Jesus have to die?”
“Where is Jesus right now?”
“Can Jesus hear me?”

You can reply:

“Jesus is with you through His Spirit. You may not see Him with your eyes, but you can feel His love and see what He does in your life.”

Jesus promised, “I am with you always.” — Matthew 28:20 NIV

And when you don’t know an answer, it’s okay to say:

“That’s a great question. Let’s learn about it together.”

This shows your child that faith is something you grow into, not something you have to understand all at once.

If your child asks these kinds of big questions often, you may find the children’s book The Wondering Place helpful. It’s an illustrated chapter book that offers simple, biblical explanations for many of the big questions kids ask about Jesus and Christianity.

9. Remind Them That Jesus Loves Them Personally

Above everything else, make sure your child know this: Jesus loves them.

You can say:

“Jesus loves you more than you can even imagine. He knows you, He sees you, and He will always be with you.”

The Bible promises, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5

Let your child know they were made on purpose and that God cares about their life, their feelings, and their future.

What to Remember

You don’t need perfect answers to talk with your child about Jesus. What matters most is showing up with love and honesty.

Help your child remember:

  • Jesus came to earth because He loves us

  • Jesus died in our place to bring us back to God

  • Jesus rose back to life to give us hope for the future

  • Jesus walks with us every day

  • Jesus wants a close relationship with each of us

As your child grows, their understanding will grow too. The seeds you plant now can shape their faith for years to come.
